Concord Baptist Church

Dallas, TX

Located just south of downtown Dallas Texas, surrounded on three sides by the beautiful mountain biking Frank P. Wise Park and just North of the 20/67 clover interchange. A gentle slope toward the back of the site opens up views of the park and natural vegetation. The existing building has been developed in phases over the past decades and as such has lost the sense of arrival at the pedestrian scale, looking to preserve natural light into both existing buildings and offer a clear front door a rectangle form inside the existing wedge was designed.

Project Info

Looking to project a sense of ownership and brand identity the church’s logo has been incorporated into the canopy volume in the void space, adding a delightful shadow casting the logo on a sunny day down to the patio surface below. The brand color also greets people with custom colored entry door pulls.

The new entry volume shades Sunday morning direct sunlight and stretches out toward the main parking section to welcome visitors. Reaching past the steps offering protection from rain upon approach.

Program

The entry patio has been raised up to balance the levels between the two existing buildings as well as give expansive views to the adjacent park. The canopy is being held by a singular structural steel column designed to mimic the trees found in the adjacent park. The main program was to create a connection between the existing building and open up internal views to the major programmatic elements that exist today, mainly worship and gathering, kids ministry, and connection and gathering.
