Towne South Church of Christ
Elizabeth City, NC
Located approximately one hour south of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth City is a small coastal community situated along the Albemarle Sound. The city is experiencing rapid growth and a notable wave of new development focused on family, health, recreation, and revitalization. Towne South Church of Christ sits just south of the city limits, surrounded by open fields and small residential subdivisions, with downtown Elizabeth City less than a 10-minute drive away. The primary goal of the project was to introduce natural light and create an inviting entry experience for the proposed lobby. Large windows provide passersby with views into the building, allowing the activity of the church to become part of the experience from the street and creating a welcoming sense of connection. The building is clad in metal panels that reflect the surrounding rural and agricultural context. Large overhangs and a prominent front canopy provide controlled daylight while protecting pedestrians from the region’s frequent rain and wet weather.
